Traveling Round the World With a Backpack and a Budget

Do you dream of traveling round the world? Have you always imagined what it would be like to leave all of the trials in life behind, pack a backpack, and see see what’s out in the world? Well, you can do it and stay within your budget no matter how small that budget is.

Traveling round the world is a dream of many and a reality of few. However, people have been doing it for hundreds of years. In today’s world of modern technology it is easier than ever. ATM machines are widely available, transportation improves on a daily basis and wifi connections are available everywhere. Long gone are the days of being out of contact for extended periods of time. Today’s traveler is only a phone card, wifi connection or skype hookup away.

Many countries throughout the world can afford you a very comfortable traveling experience for a fraction of what it costs for normal daily expenses in the western world. Places like Southeast Asia, India, Eastern Europe and South America are heavily traveled and have become both accessible and economically viable to round the world travelers. The costs of traveling in Southeast Asia can be as low as $20 a day. In many places $50 a day will afford you the lifestyle of a king. Prices are so low in India that in many parts of the country it would be almost impossible to spend $50 a day. By eliminating your carrying debt at home you can travel round the world for a very modest sum.

Using an average budget of only $50 a day you can successfully travel throughout the globe. The budget of $50 a day is a per day average which should include transport, lodging, food, recreation and beer (always an important thing to budget). In many countries you will spend considerably less than your per day budget. By spending less in some locales it will allow for higher expenditures in others. It also allows for activities to be put into the budget. After all, if you travel round the world to India to see the Taj Mahal you intend to enter the palace despite the $32 admission cost.

10 Things You Must Pack When Traveling Around the World

When you have decided to travel around the world it is one of the biggest decisions in your life. We have compiled a list of 10 things you must pack.

1. Your backpack

Technically you are packing everything into your backpack. A good backpack is going to make your trip practical and much easier. A poorly chosen backpack is going to make your trip very difficult. The smallest backpack you can get all of your stuff into is the key. Of course only taking a limited amount of stuff is what really dictates your backpack choice.

2. Your Passport

This may seem painfully obvious but you would be surprised how many people do not know that if they don’t have at least 6 months before their passport expires from the end of their trip they will most likely be denied access into some countries. Bottom line is make sure your passport has plenty of time before it expires.

3. ATM Card

The world is getting smaller and ATM’s are available in most major cities. Make sure you use a bank that does not charge fro international withdraws as this can cost you a small fortune.

4. Drugs or more importantly prescriptions

If you take any prescription drugs make sure you have current prescriptions from your doctor. It’s also a good idea to get an antibiotic prescription before you go.

5. Power converter

Remember most countries do not have the same power outlets as we do and if you are bringing any electronics you will need to recharge them. A simple travel size power converter will be all you need.

6. Padlock

Always lock your stuff up with a quality padlock and the chance of theft goes way down.

7. Pen/Notebook

While this is something easily purchased on the road you are going to want to take notes from day one. You will not always remember everywhere you have been but with a quick note in your notebook you can always look back for a reminder.

8. Netbook/iPad/Macbook

While some people may say you don’t need this because there are internet cafes throughout the world for me this is a must have. Make sure you keep it small though because you will be lugging it everywhere.

9. Contacts personal hygiene stuff

On the road you will be able to find anything you need but your favorite brand or style will not always be available. Make sure you stock up on the must haves before you leave.

10. A good attitude

Without a good attitude you might as well just stay home. Remember things will not always go right but with the right attitude it will always be an adventure.

Insider Tips For Travelling Around The World

1. A head torch is the most useful thing in the world.

Money, passport, tickets and a head torch are all you really need for any Round the World trip. A head torch is, in our opinion, the definitive item for travelling around the world. It’s perfect for camping – how else are you going to read in bed? It’s also crucial for blackouts, which happen all the time on the islands in Thailand and in Kathmandu. They’re also great for bathrooms on the road at night, particularly in India. Don’t even think about leaving for your Round the World trip without one.

2. Don’t walk backwards in flip flops.
This never works and always ends in humiliation.

3. Learn ‘hello’ and ‘thank you’ in each language.
These few words, and a smile, will really go a long way. You’re more likely to get those real life experiences with local people all around the world if you open up to them.

4. Take a real towel
Yes it’s true. Travel towels take up less space. However, unless you buy a really expensive one, you’ll be regretting your travel towel purchase by the second month. I reality, most of them don’t dry quickly, and trying to dry your body with one is a bit like wiping yourself with cling film. Comfort is something that you’ll learn to really value during your Round the World trip, and a real, proper, fluffy towel is a sure fire way to get it. It makes coming out of the shower on a freezing morning one hundred times easier.

5. Double check before you check out
Every time you leave a hostel, hut or hotel, cast your eyes over the room to make sure that you haven’t left anything behind. Otherwise, like me, you’ll leave a trail of belongings around the world on your Round the World trip.

6. Call your Mum every now and again
Like everyone else, you probably forget to call home regularly during your Round the World trip. Guaranteed, when you get tired and homesick, you’re Mum’s roast dinner and your old bedroom will be the only things on your mind, so do her a favour a try to call. Face it, you’ll probably be moving in with her again when your Round the World trip is over.

7. You only really need to pack for a year what you would pack for a week
It’s an oldie but a goodie.

8. Take a ball of string
Sounds a bit weird, but if your backpack breaks while you’re travelling around the world, a ball of string is very handy. Equally, if you need to dry your luxurious fluffy towel, string is indispensable. You can fashion a Blue Peter style washing line in seconds.

9. Take a bottle opener
This is, hands down, the best object for making friends during a Round the World trip. There’s no point cycling to a remote beach in Vietnam or Indonesia for sunset unless you can open that epic beer once you get there. Frustration doesn’t even begin to cover it.

10. Don’t spend your whole trip on Facebook!
So many people travel around the world with their eyes glued to their iPhone, IPad, MacBook or Smart Phone. The best thing to do when you land in the first destination on your Round the World trip is to phone your mum and then switch it off. Use it for emergencies, upload your photos when your memory runs out, but otherwise forget about it. You want to be eyes up and looking all around you, not looking towards home and trying to outdo your friends.

Travel Round the World Tips From a Vagabond

If you want go on an around the world trip you would be an absolute fool to pay for your flights one at a time. Save yourself heaps of headaches and purchase a round the world ticket ahead of time; they’re flexible, and uber cheap. Here are some tips I’ve picked up during my best Phileas Fogg impression:

Get off the beaten trail, just not with flights. Around the world flights are relatively cheap due to the fact they are bought and sold in large volumes. It naturally follows that the major cities of the world receive the lion’s share of the wholesale fares, which can mean a savings of thousands of dollars (or ten British pounds, last time I checked). Think of a RTW ticket as a general concept for your trip, then use local flights (or better yet, overland) to fill in the gaps.

Surface to surface savings. There are two benefits to traveling overland rather than flying: 1) you’ll see a whole lot more of the country you are traveling in, and 2) you’ll save a good chunk of change doing it, especially if you can sleep on the train or bus (tuk tuks may be a little hard to catch a cat nap on, but you’re certainly welcome to try). Twenty thousand feet is so overrated.

Go big, go go home. Dude, you’re traveling around the world! Pick some places you’ve always dreamed of going to; don’t just settle for the ubiquitous New York-London-Paris-Rome thing…challenge yourself. At the end of the trip, you’ll find out that you are a very different person. This is the point of travel!

Top 5 Risks Travellers Face in Adventure Travel

Sun basking on the beach with glass of cocktail in the hand may not be an ideal holiday style for everybody, thus a new form of holidaying – adventure sports holidays or adventure travel has become really popular. Adventure sports holidays are where travellers get an opportunity to try their hands at adrenal gushing and challenging activities such as mountain climbing, exploring caves, mountain biking, rafting, bungee jumping etc.

Because of its popularity, adventure travel coupled with adventure sports has become a part of the itinerary of almost all camping sites, resorts and hotels around the world that wish to provide their clients with something extra to do on their stay with there. Inclusion of adventure sports surely adds excitement and thrill to a traveller’s halt, but this comes with potential dangers which loom high on personal safety.

Top five risks involved in adventure travel are listed below:

1. All adventure activities and sports include dedicated gear, which is vital and should be used at all time while carrying out an activity. The gear is properly tested before use and almost all activities are carried out in a close observation of an instructor, whose main motive is to maintain your safety and make sure you adhere to all the safety requirements, but there can be a small chance that the safety equipment may fail. Therefore, safety is always an issue with adventure activities.

2. Mountain climbing can be a risky affair because as you travel uphill, the density of the oxygen in the air keeps decreasing which makes breathing difficult. If first aid is not administered, this can lead to chest pain and acute headaches, which if untreated, can lead to heart attack.

3. Mountain biking can be fun until cyclists try to do a little extra. Mountain bikers are at a risk of altitude sickness (as discussed in risk of mountain climbing above) and are also very prone to accidents because of the rough terrains selected for biking.

4. When you hit the water in a raft, you are always wearing a life jacket and are accompanied by an instructor. But the river current can flip you off the boat. Thus, while rafting you’re always at the risk of drowning or injuring yourself in the water.

5. Caving or cave exploration is one of the most thrilling adventure activities. Activity depends on the cave and how travellers negotiate squeezes, pitches, waters and rocks. Though caving has become safer with safety equipment but still travellers and adventurers are at risk of falling rocks, floods, falling, hypothermia and fatigue.
